Weiner looks like she knows what she is doing. I wonder who taught her the craft?

Wade - I don't know this person and I am not saying that she doesn't know what she is doing, but how can you tell from this 1 still shot that she was not posed by a trainer and the trainer is not just out of the picture on the left cueing the horse?

Jeannie,
I know her, and you just stepped into a pile of road apples. LOL I'll wait for Col. Herriott to get here and offer insight.

HEIDI Herriott-Koch: Probably taken during Sarasota Fairgrounds Showfolks Circus Dec. 2008.

Dave,
You are right. I just enlarged it, it is Heidi.
By the way, if you didn't see it, and you are the OABA circus guy, there was a question about using the OABA logo if you are a member, and also using the logo of affiliated organizations. What do you know about that, is it allowed? A lot of folks want to know these things, Dave.

Wade - You missed my point. Regardless of who it is or who trained it, how can you tell from a single still posed picture whether or not a person knows what they are doing? And, I've stepped in bigger piles than that and survived.

Jeannie,
Agreed while not conclusive, you can get a pretty good idea, if you are looking with an educated, impartial/unbiased eye.
Someone emailed me from Germany last week, and asked "who do you think is the best act working today, Alex Lacey, Martin Lacey Jr., Fredrick Pinder, or Tommy Dieck." I responded back simply, "In response to your question, I would have to say Adam Burck." I haven't heard back, and as he was not a educated member of the animal training fraternity, but instead a fan, I assume knows he will not get anymore of an unbiased answer to his question then that. LOL

Wade - Just out of curiosity, do you consider me an educated member of the animal training fraternity or a mere fan?

Jeannie,
I could not make that judgment without knowing your complete animal training resume, and observing you train, and to what association/industry you were referring/comparing to?

Wade - You can be very diplomatic when you want to. I am by no means a trainer, but have ridden and driven everything from ponies to draft horses since I was 4, though haven't done much riding in the last 15 years or so. I have done some basic training of my own horses over the years and shown from the local playday level to Appaloosa World show and Clydesdale Nationals. I have taken the reins of Clydesdale and Belgian horses that I never drove before and won cart classes because the owners had faith in my ability. I consider myself a fan and observer when it comes to the circus arts. You can learn a lot by observing and from listening to discussions such as your blog, but that will never make one a trainer.

If circus is going to change and survive, the voices of those who care but are not "with it and for it" need to be heard too. I can't imagine a circus without animals. Your blog allows everyone to voice their opinions, even if you do shoot them down sometimes, and we get to see different sides of arguments about animal care and training. I do know for a fact, though, that most circus animals receive better care than a lot of household pets. There are bad people in every industry and it is up to each industry to police itself, but sometimes it takes the action of outsiders to set the wheels of change in motion.

Jeannie,
Being diplomatic if the situation warrants it because it is unclear, is one thing, being diplomatic to make ones self look good, or to be liked is wrong, false, phony, "cute and charming", and leads to nothing but a pat on the back for the politician or wrong thoughts by the party. Doesn't help anything, actually harms. I would rather die, then be political because I had to.
If you are now asking in comparison to Dianne Old Rossi, I would have to say no. But that is only because I have never seen you train. LOL
Taking a chance on "possibly shooting you down",(which is often mistaken for no valid rebuttal) I would like to suggest that I have seen a whole lot more animal in the circus, as well as zoos, and by no means blanketing any of them, I disagree strongly with the statement that they "received better care then most household pets, with out blanketing them." As a matter of fact, have nothing what so ever to do with each other.
Yes, by all means outside influences should have an opinion, as long as that opinion is learned, and not based on friendships or bias, and nobody encourages them more then I do. It might influence the validity of their statements. The lumping in all together is what has harmed, and the standards of individuals is what has been mucked about, as Logan Jacot attempted to do. Everybody wants to be lumped, or lump their friends in with the best, but nobody wants to be lumped, or lump their friends in with the worst.
Caring for something because it is how you survive, and caring for it because you will miss it when it is gone, are different levels of caring.

Wade - Never in my wildest dreams would I ever compare myself to Dianne. I consider it a privilege just to know her and call her my friend.

Jeannie,
I am sure she will not take offense, as it was not meant to offend. It was a reference to "if I understand what you are asking" by this question: do you consider me an educated member of the animal training fraternity.
