A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Wade, still looking for informations about the stars on some elephants, I found that today, from this link:
http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/005/AD031E/ad031e0d.htm
Hope that can helps.
"After receiving the name and registration number of the elephant, MTE personnel use a branding iron to affix the registration number and a star onto both buttocks of the elephants.
In former times, up to 1942, five European firms and one indigenous firm worked the country's teak forests, and they marked and registered their elephants as follows:
Companies
Registration mark (by branding)
Bombay Burma Trading Co., Ltd.
C
Steel Brothers Co., Ltd.
SB
McGregor and Co., Ltd.
M
Foucar Co., Ltd.
F
T.D. Fndlay and sons
TD
Ba O Co., Ltd.
O
At present, MTEs mark their elephants with a star and the FD mark their elephants with the letters FD."
I think we found some answers about the origin of the numbers, stars or letters.
Guillaume
Guillaume,
Thank you. Great information. I think we can now see a connection between European animal dealers and teak industrty firms from Europe.
I can't seem to get the link to work, but great info.
Wade
Wade - the link is cut off. Try this. If it doesn't work, just put in the first part -
http://www.fao.org
and then in the search put in elephant branding and it will bring up the article.

Jeannie
Jeannie,
Thank you. How about the two great looking App's today? That leopard baby is unreal.
Wade
Wade - What do you know about that baby? I really think Dianne should have him. He would be a great addition to her stable.
Jeannie
Captive born elephants and captured wild elephants belonging to MTE are also registered at the MTE headquarters from birth to death. A registration number and the name of the elephant are given after training. After receiving the name and registration number of the elephant, MTE personnel use a branding iron to affix the registration number and a star onto both buttocks of the elephants.
I find the above statement in regards to branding both buttocks with a star and number most interesting in that none of the Ringling elephants have a number an at least one of the blue show babies only had one star on, if I remember, it's left buttocks. If a number and two stars is standard why no number and one star in the Ringling elephant cases. Did they only require two stars and a number if they were staying with the lumber company? Why even brand if they were captured for export?
Wade
Jeannie,
Ridiculous!! I should have him. I would make him an honorable war horse piaffeing proudly to Boots and Saddles. She would make him a candy Michael Flatley dancer jigging to some Celtic nonsense.
Wade
Wade - That may be, but you would still have to send him to Dianne to train the piaffe correctly.
Jeannie
Jeannie,
What is your point. LOL
Wade
