A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

I still remember the first time I saw Gunther in 1969. We had heard all the tales about the amazing trainer from Germany that could work with horses, tigers, and elephants. Jules Jacot and I sat in our "jury box" at the St. Louis Arena to critique his performance. We decided that we saw some new tricks and style of presentation but it wasn't earth changing. Then came the finale of a BIG show (somewhere I have my program). I was looking, no Gunther -- I figured he was excused. On came the elephants with Gunther a top Kongo at the end waving to the audience. THEN I finally got it, he was an amazing performer.
I'd come to appreciate his training talents and admire his work ethic but 40 years later that first show is still a great memory.
Jim,
I remember the first show I saw him perform at also, because it was the first Circus I had seen. I didn't believe what I saw so I went back for the next show. By the end of the night, I had decided that was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
