A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.
You asked me what color the lion below is, White or Champagne? I will ask you, what color is the lion above, White or Champagne?

Wade - you are baiting Amy! Careful now - she's smarter than most. LOL
Wade,
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I would go with champagne. This reasoning comes from the undertones of color which can be compared to in color of champagne or sparkling cider.

Steve, I answered some of your questions back in September, but I don't know if you ever saw the information, as the post was lost, and then replaced. Craig Busch from Zion Wildlife Gardens in New Zealand obtained his first "white" lions from the Rhino & Lion Park in South Africa. He also has a breeding program for barbary lions. Also, Tombo and Tonyi are still at Werribee:

Mary Ann - thank you for your help.
I am still trying to get info from the TAG Convenor over here about Tombo and Tonyi.
The zoo world is so anti - white that I am not sure if they are aware that these lions are hets.
I'll keep you posted when I hear back from them.
Not sure about Zion's "Barbary" lions. Most "Barbarys" in zoos worldwide have failed the DNA test. We also have a couple of big, black maned, black bellied males but I know what their lineage is and I wouldn't call them Barbarys!
Regards.
Steve
Steve, I don't think that they are aware that Tombo and Tonyi are heterozygous. The yahoo article did not say that they were, and the article has become outdated and disappeared. However, I saved the picture of Tombo and Tonyi and will e-mail it to Wade for you.
Mary Ann
Thank you Mary Ann. Wade has passed the pic on to me - somewhat reluctantly as I'm not sure that he recognised what species of cat they are!! LOL
Steve,
There was not reluctance at all. I am positive what I forwarded were Barbary lion's. At least I think they were?
Wade
Wade, Tombo and Tonyi are heterozygous "white lions" born in Philadelphia to Merlin and Vinkel. Their littermate sister is "white" Nokanda, the queen of the African Savannah in Toronto. We saw them all in 1996 in Philadelphia when they were only 3 1/2 months old, playing tug-of-war with a piece of meat. Tombo and Tonyi are now in Werribee, Melbourne, Australia.
Steve, what kind of place is Werribee? Is it a zoo or a safari park? Public or private?
Mary Ann
Werribee is an "open range" zoo owned by the government of the Australian State of Victoria. Effectively it is the sister zoo of the city zoo in Melbourne which is also owned by the Victorian Government.
