A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

It can be the same, and the lions too, and in this case the man in the picture a young Campolongo.
Raffaele,
The other guy sure isn't an old Campolongo. That would make the lions with Campolongo about 46-47. If it is the same cage, I suggest they stayed a little bit to long with "tradition." It's a good idea to change/freshen up the equipment every 50 or 60 years. Oh, wait minute. Maybe that's Hawthorns requisites.
It's the "golden cage"from Harry
Belli.
It will be a good idea to introduce in Monte Carlo a Lifetime Requisits Award: Hawtorn's can be for sure one of the nominations. I can't recall of other props having travelled the planet and enduring for decades: I patiently admired time to time those sophisticated extending pyramids from Atlantic shores, thru Bavarian castle parkings, across the Eiffel tower to Sicilan obscure villages.
Raffaele,
LOL. I endured then not quite as patiently. The idea was sound, but no uglier requisite was ever used with the exception of a motorcycle. What started as a lowly "hand operated" affair purchased from Josip Marcan eventually turned into 7 gleaming monstrosities. And 5 star topped arenas. But just like a lousy act Raffaele, nobody wanted to express their thoughts to him, so he built more, "because every body loves them". They ranted about the beauty, and gagged in private. It used to be when you went on a show and saw a net pull up cage you were either on Ringling or the White Tigers were here.

Rob,
In reference to the "golden cage" was it actually gold? I thought the idea was to make the arena appear as inconspicuous as possible.

Guess it was painted gold.It was much refered to as The famous golden cage. Was different all together with the ornaments in it.
But that was 40,50 years ago.
Rob,
Not for nothing, but the only thing that did "gold" honor were the props Louis Knie had made in the 70's.
