Mary Ann Howell commissioned the beautiful work of art above illustrating the crossing of the Indian and Domestic lines of white tigers. Kesari daughter of Mohini is depicted in the center, and on the left is Ramana who was mated with Kesari and she produced the litter on the left consisting of Peela the gold son, Priya, Bharat, and Ranjit. Tony is the White Tiger depicted on the right. He was mated with Kesari in 1976 and they produced the litter on the right consisting of Ika, Ari, Bhim, Sumita, and gold daughter Kamala. The White Tigers in the world today are probably descended from one of these 9 cubs.

I would like to thank two of my very dear friends for contibutions to this post. I thank Michael W. Dulaney, curator of the Cincinnati Zoo, for giving us permission to use his picture of Sumita. It was taken by him when she was retired to the Buffalo Zoo. I also thank Terry Lynn Schalk, the artist who so beautifully executed "Mohini's Legacy", provided me with many prints over the last nine years, and has recently started making notecards which I enjoy giving as gifts.
