On a "standard scale" of Ursula Bottcher to minus 10 where would these young bears be placed?
I have been asked often, "what is your idea of a humiliating animal behavior." A slide in a cage bear act, a horse "sitting up," head in a lions mouth, an elephant riding a tricycle. There you have it, like it or not, just my opinion.

I don't know about what is humiliating to animals, but how many other acts use polar bears? Are there any great acts?

I'd say maybe an eight? They are nice looking bears, but seem to be just wandering around the ring. And I agree about the slide "trick." And is that just a net around the ring?
Thought that I commented on this one,but something must have gone wrong.This is Yulia Denysenko.There are some video's of the act on the web and some article's.O,how she love her bears.
In my opinion animalactivists can rub there hands with this act,and I feel reluctant to say this,I can imagine something with it.

In my humble opinion, the greatest of my era was Ursula Bottcher. There are pictures of her further back in the blog. The environment of a traveling situation is not good for all animals, Polar Bears being one of them. The substrate and water requirements that are necessary for a healthy captive life is next to impossible to provide in the Circus. Great advancements have been made in the husbandry practices of the Circus, and many more advances WILL be made, but not all species are suited for "the life." If you really dig and appreciate a Polar Bear get involved with Global Warming. There in lies their future.

I don't quite understand what you are saying, but I think I do. I have heard some "things" also. I appreciate your apprehension. Let me take the heat, if it is forthcoming. It is about the animals, and ONLY the animals. You have my email. Send me the links to the videos, and the articles. If I note something not right, I will blast it. ONLY the animals count. Nothing or nobody else.

I thought it was 1-10,one being the best,so I gave them an eight.And it was 12 polar bears....

12 initially, but it stayed at 10 consistently that last few years. What you did for a short time doesn't count, over a long period of time is what validates.

Did she present this act with the Russian State Circus this year. I have a picture of this act,but they have on ice skates..And no Wade,I don't mean the polar bears..LOL..

The bears may be on ice skates also. Herta Cuneo's bears ice skated,(the older one's Boo Boo and Micha and I forget the other one) The skates were pretty unique. They had double blades, and the bears foot was placed on them, and they were laced up similar to a Roman sandal.

This is a private email which I am posting as it is very insightful. It is from an individual who is a cage act fan, and lover of all things Circus. The next time somebody wants to tell me, the public doesn't care, or the public doesn't know any better, you might reference it. Maybe the public just isn't telling you, and if they do they are branded a "radical", because their view opposes you.

I don't know how it is in the states,but in Europe everything is done to make the animals as confortable
as possible in zoos ,big outside penns and in case of polar bears with a swimming pool.
For the animals ,but also for the opposition.I believe acts with polar bears will not longer be
allowed in europe in short time I a'm affraid.Allso because they are endangered.
You know I love wildanimal acts,but I strongly believe ,that acts like that ,don't do anything
good for us.I believe acts like this give food to animalactivists to proof how bad circusanimals
are treated and doing things against there nature.And in this case I agree with them.
We must do anything to proof they are wrong,well in most cases,and do anything to keep
the possibillaty of seeing animalacts in circusses in the future.
In past times everything was possible with what animals could do ,but there is a fast evolution going on,
and this is no longer the case.You know how people,activists, are looking down on say mixed acts these days.
The windows on what people tolerate ,by doing of the activists,are growing smaller and smaller.
Today trainers must defend themselves and say they use natural behaviour to let the animals do the tricks.
Then along comes an act like that ,that I feel redicule the animal by letting it skate and playing harp.
I myself feel that acts like dressed up monkey's etc ,are no longer from this time.Don't humanize
proud animals.Let them do tricks that come from there natural behaviour as limited as they are maybe,but I
think that this a way to show that animal acts have a reason to exist.I know this is along letter,
but hope you see,and can read, what I mean.It's difficult to expres this in a foreign language.

I did got back and read about Ursula, but couldn't remember is she had polar bears. Thanks for the clarification on that. Polar bears are huge animals. Inside the Point Defiance zoo they have a wooden heighth model of how tall these animals are on their hind legs. I have learned alot from your blog and I am enjoying all the knowledge.
