Terrell Jacobs was The Lion King and a consummate showman who knew how to promote his most accomplished lioness. Sheba was photographed with everyone who was anyone, from the Justin Boots guy to Richard Nixon. She was photographed further when she sprouted a mane, evolved other masculine essentials, and became a male. This development was not new to animals. It had been studied and documented before, but Terrell Jacobs knew how to get the best coverage and Sheba became known to the world.

Wade, you posted Vinkel, the menopausal champagne lioness at the Philadelphia Zoo on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. The post was titled "Vinkel--15 year old menopausal female White lion". It is obvious that "she sprouted a mane", but I never heard anything that indicated that she "evolved other masculine essentials, and became a male". Is that possible?

so by evolving other masculine essentials does that mean Vinkel and Sheba grew male organs? Or by male do you mean they took on large amounts of testosterone? I am not well knowledgable in this area, in fact, I never even knew this happened. I guess zoobooks can't teach you everything as a kid. lol

Mary Ann and Amy,
No they can not "evolve other masculine essentials". As Mary Ann, knows the female lion will "sometimes" grow a "remnant" of a mane. Nothing big and spectacular like a male. The statement about the essentials is again an example of a rumor propagated by the uninformed as history. Note who posted the comment. I took it off the "History Channel." It is the foundation of Circus Lore/History. I used to laugh or shake my head in disbelief at some of the things stated as fact. Now it brings me close to tears, because we should have had a standard long, long, ago.

If we could run a photo of Clyde Beatty to reference against these pictures I think many would learn about the difference between trained and subjugated. In the photo above take a count of how many cats are watching whats going on, and how many are staring out of the arena at their "paradise" day dreaming.
