The bear grottos are located approximately where the old bear cages used to be located at. Mary Ann wrote that the passage to the right in the picture above, leads to the underwater viewing area in the last photo where the old bear exhibits below were located. It is a little disappointing that they could not have retained the historic old cages in their entirety, and utilized them, instead of destroying them for new exhibits.

Happy Birthday, Wade!
Mary Ann
I guess it is your birthday so happy birthday.
As for the cages, noone wants to see a "caged" animal. Thats why they put up plexi glass and fences. It gives the viewer a more apealing way to look at the animal, rather than feeling bad for it.

Mary Ann,
Thank you, it is much appreciated.

Amy,
The folly of humans and how they think, is to give the animals human feelings/emotions. Most zoo exhibits are built for the human species doing the viewing. If they look at an animal behind bars or in a smaller enclosure they feel sorry for the animal because they think it is in jail/prison. If they take the bars down, dig a moat, but in a waterfalls and a pond with trees, the human species thinks, "I would like to live here", and they feel better about the plight of the animals, yet with all the "furniture" there is not much actual "move around" space.
If you were to view off exhibit areas, or night dens, they are square expanded metal cells with concrete floors and walls with a bench along one side. The misconception of humans about the needs of an animal, has been a source of problem for the circus. The circus's off exhibit area is on public display 24 hrs. a day. You can's turn it inside out with rock work and landscaping in the morning when the public arrives. Some shows in Europe are going to the lame extreme of putting potted plants and trees all around to give a "garden setting." I guess if the circus fools themselves, they must assume the public is fooled also.
