Pat Derby--Hypocrite?????

1.a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
2.a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

This women has a sanctuary in California, which is now the home of Hawthorns Nic and Gyp. The word hypocrite has often been used in reference to her and Carol Buckley. I don't know if somebodies philosophies changing, and they think or do something different, necessary makes them a hypocrite in the definition of the word, as long as they are true to the mission of their new philosophy. It would better fit, the prime and proper lady who becomes a tart when she is out of the public eye, or a religious individual who does not really love their neighbors, or the person who tells you it is bad to smoke, and then sneaks into the woods to have a cigarette. If someone started out being a Nazi, and saw the philosophy/purpose of the party change with something like the "final solution" and chose not to be a part of it, or chose to help prevent the Holocaust and aid victims , that does not make them a hypocrite. A hypocrite is someone who changes their thoughts or opinions to suit their purpose, or says and acts different in public. And don't get the idea I approve of sanctuary's, and it doesn't matter if the animals are donated freely and bred. They are all the same, and they are what they are, another persons differing philosophy.

Now we get back to what makes a person qualified. Working with one elephant trained by someone else, to director of an elephant sanctuary. Or another example; buying animals to make a movie then when the movie never comes to fruition, rescuing the animals from yourself and starting a sanctuary. OR, taking over a facility start by a husband that vanishes, and changing it to a sanctuary claiming no one should have these animals in captivity but me. How do we set a standard that will include all and not just those with self serving interests.

Darryl,
The chances of qualifying a sanctuary for any type of training/animal standard is pretty remote. But if we were to try, lets compare to the qualifications of one of "our own".
Head keeper of a zoo one year(boyfriend is the Manager, forgot to mention)
Asst. Director of a Zoo one year(husband is the director, forgot t mention)
Asst. to head trainer 5 years(husband is head trainer, forgot to mention)
Polar bear trainer(presented 3 Polar bears and 4 brown bears for one year with assistance of trainer(not husband) in cage, forgot to mention.)
How's that for self serving qualifications from our fraternity. How would we qualify ones who are here for a limited time, 10-15 years and are allowed to compete for available positions? Better yet why are they allowed to compete at all? I don't even think we want to consider the Buckleys or the Derbys until our own house is clean.
