Islands in Danger--Komodo Dragon off exhibt area

This is the keeper corridor behind the scenes of the Komodo dragon enclosures. Mesh doors and sliding doors provide a safe environment to work in. The animals are trained on a daily basis to enter the off-show enclosures. This training is carried out following positive reinforcement in form of small food items and a clicker. Therefore, the enclosures can be entered each day in order to carry out maintenance work.

The three off-show dens for the Komodo dragons are only furnished with the basic equipment in order to serve as quarantine areas if necessary.

A mesh tunnel behind the second indoor enclosure leads from the off-show dens to the outdoor enclosure.
The crate in the picture is one half of the restraint crate which is used for the Komodo dragons during veterinary procedures. The two halves are connected to each other. When the lizard walked in, the two ends are closed with mesh doors. Plastic slides with spaces big enough to surround a Komodo dragon’s body are put vertical into the crate and, thus the animal is restraint.
