Don't worry I got your back, Pete Cimini, Special Gunther Assistant...

Pete left this world during 2005...I believe he came up with the same medical probem Guther had. A number of us heard Pete and his beautiful Linda speak to the Oct. 16, 2004 61st EMMETT Kelly Banquet - Hagerstown, MD. The Rick Bogers were our special guests and what an evening with the Cimini and Bogers present..We host the AFTERGLOW in our suite after the Banquet..Pete and Rick keep it going till the AM Hours until there wives said, "Thats it we are going home." Didn't see Pete again until his funeral service outside of Gerrardstown,WV..Mark Gebel flew in from Venice to speak and what a beautiful speak he made. We gathered afterwards at a nice reception nearby..A large group from Ringling
Staffers from Headquarters along With Paul/Diane Gutheil and I represented the Circus Fans. No doubt Pete was one of the good guys...When I think of Gunther I always think of OUR good friend Pete....I can just see Gunther and Pete upstairs doing the Elephant Walk. And yes, Pete will be right behind Gunther..I flew into Pittsburgh the year of Gunthers last official tour and the Pittsburgh closing. just so I could make the last walk from Mellon Arena to the train..As we walked with Gunther down those long dark streets of Pittsburgh some of those Pittsburgh Police had done this many times and knew Gunther so well hated to see it all end. They all had kind words for Gunther in this the last Pittsburgh Animal Walk .. Gunther and Pete rest in peace.

I didn't get a chance to attend any of the services to remember Gunther after his death.... but I did have the honor of being at the elephant walk during load out in Raleigh, NC ....not too long after his passing. It was obvious he was missing..... and it was at such a dirge like pace....quite a bit slower than usual, a reverent and somber march back to the train parked only a short distance from the building. I'll never forget how mild the temperature was on that foggy night.... how the street lights were dimmed by the fog....how quiet... how still everything seemed... as those majestic animals walked slowly past my family. The sounds of the elephant's soles/pads on the pavement seemed eerily muted. There was something overwhelming about the whole experience that gave us all pause to reflect on the absence of Gunther's presence.
It was just simply one of those experiences that somehow got saved in the part of my brain that stores those subtle... yet powerful memories.
As I reflect on this and other memories of my circus days, I lift a glass in honor of Gunther!
Blessings,
Jeff Darnell
