A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Sometimes its just unbelievable that some cats couldn't figure out that THEY were the most powerful member in the steel arena. Dion
Dion,
I have never equated intelligence to how many behaviors a wild animal can learn. The real smart ones say, "you are going to get a sit up, or a roll over out of me and that is it!!" Those one's have a full comprehension of power. The great trainers get as much as is possible, the poor trainers lose it as they go, or never find the full potential.
Wade
I think that is very true. Wade, every now and then we get a real nugget of wisdom. Thank you.
Adaline
Can anyone tell me what this bloke is trying to get her to do?
I've ruled out "back up", "sit up", "love me for ever" - what is he trying to achieve here?
Steve,
I believe a roll over. I saw it done one time with two sticks, pretty much this same way.
Wade
That was my guess but I've never tried to belt a roll over - only coax one - so I wasn't sure that his sticks were in the right position. LOL
Steve,
Now you know how easy it is to fool the public with "gentle methods". Crack a whip, and they think you are "Attila the Hun." Carry a number of big sticks, and you are applauded as "Cinderella" LOL
Wade
Well Cinderella's wands still don't look right to me if he's trying for a rollover!
Is it possible that this photo is reversed?
Or are we just wasting time on a mug trainer?
I am going to admit guilt on this, then explain to Steve what is going on here. I have trained cats to roll in this same method, prior to being educated. I assume Steve, that your cat rolls from you're right to left and that is why this seems off to you. Right to left is the correct way, but for some reason (ignorance to animal behavior)alot of american acts rolled left to right, not correct (see mine for example). That said, to roll the cat left to right he is in almost the correct position. The CLUB in his left hand is in the rite place to draw out the front leg of cat.The STICK in his right hand is way to high up, so I doubt he was going to bring it down on the cats right hip, more then likely it's heading for the head or mouth. I would say a buggy whip to the hip would have gone farther, and worked faster, but hey, we are talking about doing something the wrong way from stage one. What makes this even more ridiculous, is we are talking about rolling ONE cat, in an act that carried 51 cats at one time. Steve please send Wade some photos of your roll over so we can see the Australian way,,lol
Casey,
I take offense to your statement "a lot of American acts" rolled over left to right. I never saw one, and I never considered GGW, Charlie, Marcan, etc. anything but American. I have seen two rolled over left to right and those are new acts.
Wade
That shoe was not for Gebel, Baumann, or Marcan, who were not mimicking Beatty or Jacobs. Your first act rolled which way? The acts Red Hartman put out? The acts Lou trained? Come on now, don't try to blame that shit on this generation. I am guessing that alot of Michons went the wrong way as well, him being a southpaw such as myself, but we will just count Americans for now.
Thanks Casey - that is why I asked if the pic was printed back to front.
And the way too high stick had me fooled too - but I can't think of any other outcome that he was trying to achieve.
But what would I know - this guy is famous and worked with 51 cats????
Send photos? I've only just learned how to send words!!!LOL
Steve,
He is revered as the Lion King. But with no standard, I guess he could be.
Wade
Casey,
I said I only saw two roll over cats the wrong way. And one was not Michon. Although he was left handed, and waltzed them the opposite way, they rolled over in the standard direction. Don't forget his animals were to be added to the existing animals and needed to be done one way. The waltz was the odd man out.
Wade
Do you approve of bull fighting? I hope you don't.
Paul,
If you are meaning approve to mean "understanding and respecting the principle and philosophy of the art", then yes I approve of it, and love it dearly. Not being a religious individual, I also love and respect the religious significance of the matadors cape movements also. It is know as being "open minded" and not "arrogant to my personal beliefs"
