For some reason your comment will not post. I believe I have copied it in it's entirety and will post it here:
When did McClain die and how so? What became of Gardner? And what were the circumstances to so many of the Vargas girls went to Hawthorn?
Darryl, Would you care to post the photos of George, Toto, and Mac working as a three act at Baraboo you spoke off?

Ryan,
In regards to "Vargas girls" at Hawthorn, I consider only the original beautiful "Vargetts" as Vargas girls. I am only aware of two. The most beautiful, sexy, stunning one of them all, Tracy Kim Mayo(isn't that right Kitty) went there with me in 1981, and worked in the elephant act and later went with myself to Ringling in 1984, where she had been before Vargas. The other one that I am aware of Dion Arata, went there with Tom Thompson shortly after Nic was born.

Lol ok Wade, thank you. In that regard I have another question then - What were the circumstances that many of the Vargas cows went to Hawthorn? ie Gypsy, Lottie, Minnie and Sue?
Ryan,
It is a good thing you wrote the elephants names, I thought you were asking the same question again just rephrasing it.
John Cuneo bought them from Vargas as simple as that.

Lol ok Wade thank you. What kind of act did this male group perform we have spoken of previously? Somethig along the lines of the Rex/Buke/Tusko show in '89 at ALS? Or not as grandeur?
Ryan,
They weren't an act. They were used in the three acts. Tracy Kim Mayo rode Lottie in opening that I remember. LOL Rex had I believe Col, Maclain, Reed, Gardner, and Gypsy in the center ring, and I forget who David Polk, and Ted Polk had in the end rings. All three rings were presented with the trainers on horseback, Rex mounted on Yankee. Pretty impressive, I want to tell you Ryan, finishing with Col. stepping over the center ring and standing with his front feet in the Presidents box, and 5 elephants coming around the track from either direction to do a T Mount.

Ryan,
To answer your last question correctly. Twice as Grand.

Wade -
As to my original question, do we know when/where McClain died and under what circumstances? And though born at Portland, was he named after Walter McLain?
Ryan,
I don't know the circumstances of Mclain's death. Yes he was named after Walter, as Gardner was named after Cheerful, and Reed was named after Louis.
