Jim A. With an"island" exhibit like this did they leave the sea lions out, and circulate the water so it didn't freeze, or did they catch them, and take them inside? It looks like doors in the middle but I can't see chasing them all in and locking them up in the rocks. How did they operate a deal like this.

In the 1950s and 60s the sea lions at LPZ were kept in an indoor exhibit in the basement of the Reptile House next to the alligators. The exhibit pictured was still around, maybe used for aquatic birds. I guess is the way the island exhibit was managed was to drain the pool. (That's the way they handle the big exhibit pool in St. Louis.) With sea lions most of the feces are in the water, draining the pool solves most of the problem. A quick hose of the island and then the pool bottom did the job. This is when sea lion were kept in unfiltered, fresh water.
