Bask--One of the most influential sires of the modern Arabian

Bask was a Polish Arabian with an incredible length of neck. Bask sired 1050 purebred Arabian foals , most in the time before artificial insemination was widespread in the horse industry, and 196 of these were United States or Canadian National Champions. His dam was Balalajka, a daughter of Amurath-Sahib. All but one of Balalajka's progeny were by Witraz, and hence full siblings to Bask. His full sister Arfa was the dam of Argos, who was an important sire in Great Britian for Patricia Lindsay. His full sister Bandola was a mare of significance known as "the Queen of Poland," and was the dam of Bandos, by Negatiw. Bask's 3/4 sister Bachantka (by Wielki Szlem) had been imported to the United States in 1961 by Varian Arabians, where she was a Top Ten champion and major foundation mare for the Varian program.

Wonder where the breed would be now if there hadn't been a Bask?
He was a nice horse and LaCroix's knew how to promote him.
Ray used to ride a grey park horse by Bask that was pretty awesome for the time. Was that Tornado? I don't remember.

Jody,
That would have been Tornado at that time. Port Bask was also a great one. I always thought Ray was a little softer with the horses. Gene although good, was a little hard trying to get "park" out of everything. The LaCroix's did some great things for the breed, but bad things happened. Gene was instrumental in forming the Renai registry, as he was in getting the National Show Horses off the ground.

Wade,
The more I think about it, it wasn't Tornado.
This horse is one he used in clinics. I do remember wondering why they didn't promote this horse like they did the others. Maybe he was a Gdansk son. I only saw Ray ride him. Gene never did.
I agree with you that Ray did have a softer effect. Both of their horses worked good but I think Ray's horses looked a little happier doing it. Talking total picture.
Of course, I will rack my brain trying to come up with the name.

Jody,
You didn't say if it was a Stallion or a Mare. Was if possibly Hallelujah Bask? She was a pretty awesome mare the LaCroix's owned who produced Hey Hallelujah for Strawberry Banks Farm.

I think it was Cognac. Wasn't Ray the one who rode him?
Ran across someone selling old Arab mags at

Makes me wish I had kept mine...

Jody,
The World was a work of art back then. But who could possibly store them all. God, they were over 700 pages each month. A thousand pages sometimes, when Lasma would run a promo for Star World, and some of the others. Pull outs and centerfolds like Playboy. You would need a barn just for your magazines. Add the Times, and the dozen other periodicals and you are swamped.

Jody,
It quite possibly was Cognac, and Ray did ride him almost exclusively. A very pretty talented horse, who had Nabor as a great great grandfather on his dams side.
