A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Wade, the following is from Dan Koehl's elephant studbook:
"Bought from Mr Hall by citizen of Toledo, Mr Sam Davis, and given to Toledo Zoo. Shortly after arrival babe killed two elephant keepers:
1914-06-14: Killed Michael Raddatz
After this the bull was only worked by the Zoo director Lou Scherer, who kept the bull in free contact for over 31 years.
Height: 3,20 meter, weight: 5,5 tons, for many years Babe was the largest asian elephant in Northamerica.
Records about Babe (York) was updated 2008-04-06"
The Toledo Zoo now has a five-year-old African bull Louie, named for the above-named Lou Scherer. We have followed him since he was born in 2003.

Mary Ann,
I guess that validates the old adage, "cheaper isn't always better."

Folks,
This elephant was named "YORK". I have traced him back to the Pan-American Circus in 1908 and 1909. Wm. P. Hall bought the entire Pan-American Circus along with a female Asian named Jennie. Mr. Hall leased them out for a couple years before selling him to the Toledo Zoo.
Once he arrived at the Zoo his name was changed to "BABE".
Bob
Bob,
Good stuff. Thank you.
