Business Of Importing Animals Flourishes Despite War; Freight ...
1926 Louis Ruhe Importer of Wild Animals Illustrated (12/06/2011)...
Hannover Zoo:
Due to the consequences of World War I, ever increasing subsidies by the government were needed to keep the zoo open. In 1920, the city took over. But in 1922, when the zoo was no longer financially viable, it was closed. Two years later, in 1924, due to public pressure and private commitment by the animal trading company Ruhe, it was reopened with a lions' canyon and monkey rock. In 1932 Ruhe completely took over the zoo and used it as a showcase for their pet shop. Often, the animals could only be seen for a few weeks before they were sold.
During World War II the zoo was badly damaged. 1946 Ruhe restored parts of the zoo provisionally and only a few animals could be seen until the reopening in 1950.
Franz Kraml--Year Unknown
Franz Kraml with 5 tigers belong to the importer L. Ruhe at Circus Barum.
Apparently Mr. Kraml was also an accomplished elephant trainer. This from the obituary of Rolf Knie, Sr.: He(Knie) followed his uncle Charles (who died in 1940) into elephant training, taking over the big herd of Indian elephants after the departure of the master trainer Franz Kraml from Czechoslovakia at the end of 1939.
Does anyone have any additional information about Franz Kraml? Years ago Lou Regan mentioned him highly in conversations I would over hear with other trainers of the time.
I also didn't realize that the animal importer L. Ruhe owned animal act's. Did he have trainers and provided trained act's, or did he just rent the animals and the show trainer trained them, and returned them when finished?

Antelope Flying From The Pitchfork Ranch, Montana to The San Diego Zoo 1937
Does anyone know anything more about this shipment of antelope to the San Diego Zoo in 1937. Were they solely for exhibit, or was there a reason a large number of calves had to be flown off of the Pitchfork Ranch in Montana? I don't have access to my copy of 'Mr. Zoo: The Life and Legacy of Charles Schroeder' and the only thing of significance for 1937 from the San Diego online history site is:
A second flight cage, originally called "the Great Eagle cage", is built to house birds of prey on the north side of Primate Mesa. It is the world's largest bird cage of its time. (This aviary is later expanded and converted to a walk-through tropical rain forest aviary.) Dedicated 03/07/1937
Reptile Mesa is completed with outdoor pits, a Galapagos tortoise enclosure, land tortoise pens and pools for alligators and crocs.
First emu hatching.
That is Charles Schroeder above with the pilot Bill Monday. I don't know if they have landed or are preparing to leave. The plane was a Ryan Brougham. With the exception of that little information, I have not been able to find anything else.
