Peaches was the San Diego Zoo's first elephant. She arrived at the zoo in 1953 and made the journey from Africa to San Diego with keeper Ralph "Gabe" Davis, seen above.

No, Peaches was the first "African." She was also the first of that species to do 50 years in captivity in USA.
There were a number of Asian elephants who preceded her, including Boo (once Baby Boo) who was left by Cole Bros at the zoo when it was on the West Coast in 1937.
San Diego got its first Asian elephants in June 1923, Empress and Queenie.
The keeper Gabe Davis was a veteran circus animal man.
