Does Anyone Know The Rest Of The Story?--Brookfield Zoo 1953

The elephant data base list's Melinda as dead Oct. 30, 1953 and her arrival at Brookfield as May 10, 1952. It's pretty remarkable if they kept her in this sling for over two week's before she died. She came from the Seabury Foundation (Charles Ward Seabury.) How did she break her legs, and what was the Seabury Foundation?

Charles Seabury made a lot of money in the insurance business. Not enough to run for President so he gave several baby elephants to Brookfield Zoo. The Seabury Foundation was probably his accountant's idea.

Jim,
Thanks. Am I right in assuming he was Republican, as I would think donkey's would be a cheaper and easier "gift" to give.
