The PAWS web site written by Pat Derby and Ed Stewart above, states in Oct. 2010: Prince and Sabu, both retired performing elephants, are in good health so we expect them to be with us for a very long time.

http://dankoehl.blogspot.com/2012/01/tuberculosis-in-two-elephant.html

And Patricia Zerbini, who housed Sabu at the Two Tail Ranch in Willistone, Florida, before his relocation to PAWS says: Sabu had no medical issues here, he was very sound and never showed any joint stiffness what so ever.

Sabu was here untill a year ago when he left to go to PAWS, He did belong and was here under the care of Ringling Bros. staff and veterinarians, but I saw him every day and in all the years he had been here I never saw any signs of arthritis, or other illness, he was a very healthy beautiful animal, the reason he was retired so young I was told is because he got too large to travel comfortably by train. I was here the day he was loaded and lended a hand with his loading, he in no way had any stiffness, soarness, or signs of problems with his joints, I would think that if he had any arthritis in him that would cause his collapse and death a year later he would have had to show some kind of signs while here at the ranch, I am not sure what happened to him while in the care of PAWS and I am sure we will never know but I do not in any way shape or form believe that arthritis was a factor in his death. 'Sabu, the male elephant donated to PAWS in 2010 by Ringling Bros. Circus was euthanized a year later due to "complications from arthritis" yet in the press release issued upon his arrival they state : "Prince and Sabu, both retired performing elephants, are in good health so we expect them to be with us for a very long time!!!!!!!" What's up with that, PAWS'

Wade, you have far more experience around elephants than I do. "IF" Sabu was hurting that bad, that he couldn't get back up himself, wouldn't they have notice a weight loss in his mass?

If a tiger gets bad sick, they will slowdown or stop eating.

At the huge weight he was when he arrived, I have to wonder if they didn't have a male domination problem going on instead and couldn't deal with it.

Just askking,
Bob

Bob,
I don't think you would notice much weight loss in arthritis. But you should surely notice a stiffness or limp long, long before they go down and can't get up by themselves. Going down and not getting up sounds like something other then arthritis, and in most cases yes, you should see a weight loss. I have never seen a "healthy" elephant go down and not get up, but I have seen two "apparently" healthy elephants all of a sudden drop dead. One was one circus Vargas while the elephant was drinking water after the act, and the second was Jackie whom I mentioned the other day. Both were posted and heart attack was the conclusion.
If I am interpreting that you are suggesting two males were together I don't think PAWS has the knowledge or skill to deal with that, and I don't think they would have done that. It is an odd, odd situation.

P.A.W.S. had Nicholas, Prince and Sabu within sight of each other as I understand their layout. I'm not saying they were in contact with each other but I can't help but feel P.A.W.S. couldn't handle Sabu.

With the history of these elephants being fairly well known to the people at P.A.W.S. and their suggestion that the Arthritis was caused by all those years of circus behaviors, when in fact Sabu had very little in the way of performing history, it really makes me feel like they are doing a complete mis-direction in their statements.

I wonder how many news reporters would even think twice about what P.A.W.S. releases. Probably none of them.

Bob,
Everybody, PAWS, PETA, AR, the Circus, Zoos have become illusionist's with the misdirection and sleight of hand. It is why so much of the public as we have learned is "confused" as to what is what. Very few, I being one point that out and try to keep it real. It isn't a comfortable thing to do, believe me, and the venom is incredible. I will try to cut and past a couple of facebook "conversations" as examples. One regarding the Toronto elephants, and one regarding the "Martin Lacey Stress Test." The most outrageous statements came from a self professed "circus publicist." Another well meaner cutting our throats and letting us bleed out. Dan's fine story made every effort to point out how many elephants have died shortly after going to sanctuaries, while making every effort to stay away from just as many have died shortly after going someplace else. Example the elephant Judy died 3 years after leaving Hawthorn in the possession of Chris Hamblin. Joy was the healthiest, most vibrant, personable African you would ever want to be around. She died 4 years after leaving Hawthorn in the care of Carson and Barnes. Relevant? I believe if one issue(sanctuaries) is relevant, the other(circus/private individual) also is. I just like to try to keep it in reality so folks can make a fair and balanced decision. The so called "instructional feline training videos" of which you tube is full of them are a joke, just a joke. Seat training young animals. What nonsense, what misdirection. Show me an arena run start to finish. Show me a roll over, a hind leg walk, a large group laydown sit up start to finish. If done right it is as inoffensive as seat training babies. I done wrong, the public might "misinterpret." Maybe that is why we only see the "misdirection" of seat training babies.
