Unknown Zoo

Does anyone know what these "growths" are on this caribou's antlers, and what causes them?

Looks likehe's shedding the outer 'velvet' covering on his antlers- natural and normal

Anonymous,
Serious, that's how it sheds off?

Antler growth, and abnormalities, are determined only by nutrition. This animal evidently got into something during the growth period which he shouldn't have.
At the old Fred Baer Museum in Gaylord, MI there was an entire room of mounts with moose and deer with abnormal antlers. One moose had antlers shaped like two large mushrooms.

Anonymous,
I am going to assume you are anonymous #2 and not the first one. It sure helps if folks use their name, but thank you anyway. I wasn't buying the "shed" deal because I have seen deer, elk, etc. shed and it never looked anything like this, and nutrition makes more sense. I have also seen many abnormal head/horn mounts(and yes, the moose you mention was a real freak) both in person and in pictures. Might the moose have been a genetic throwback the the extinct "cervalces scotti" or Stag Moose, which was a cross between modern moose and modern elk? It's antlers from fossil remains tended to be extremely palmated. This example in the picture just looked more "tumor/cancer" like then abnormal.
