A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Nothing for sure. Never heard of S.C.Charles but there were a lot of sea lion trainers in the early days. Lots of shows had sea lion acts before good portable heaters for primates.
I took a quick look in "It Began With A Roar", the San Diego Zoo history book. No mention of Charles but it say that San Diego had a sea lion trainer on staff since 1928. San Diego wasn't very much of a zoo in those early days but did have access to a lot of sea lions. Maybe?
