Ostrich Racing in Czechoslovakia?

Does anyone have any idea why ostrich racing seemed to be so popular in Czechoslovakia in the early 1900's and is it still practiced today? It seem's such an odd pastime for that particular place. The article above states that a bit is used, but like a Llama or Guanaco, I don't see why just a side-pull would not be sufficient.
