Georgia Aquarium 2011
Vancouver Aquarium 1986
Vancouver Aquarium 1980
Vancouver Aquarium 1971
Does anyone know what in the world is going on here? In this backwards walk in time from natural and education in 2011, to 1986 when exploitation stopped and natural and education started, to 1980 when the victimized far left's had their feelings really hurt, to 1971 when "exploitation" of animals was in full swing, and marineland parks, animals shows, land and sea were all the rage, can somebody PLEASE help me understand the difference between last photo and the first photo???? It's not clear to me what exploiting is, and what educating is???
I can recall a day not so long ago when AZA(then AAZPA) wouldn't touch you with an accreditation if you even remotely looked like a safari park/theme park(they wouldn't accept my membership in 1984 because of "your association with the circus". Now they accredit facilities such as this:
Downtown Aquarium - Houston, TX
How cockeyed is the layperson in regards to how much space an animal needs to be happy, and what's exploitation and whats education? We know all about the fortunes being spent to give elephants and other "abused" land mammals in zoo's more "space." Forget the circus, that's just bad, no matter how you look at it, right?(that's what is said anyway) Any fish rescue sanctuaries out there? Any non profit save the guppy from abuse deal's? Almost 71% of the world's surface is covered with salt water oceans. Have you ever heard anyone, looking at a row of aquariums in a zoo or a fish store moan, whine, and sob and demand the release of all those poor captive fish, or at the least given a big lake on a sanctuary? But they will sure demand it, because they just know, when it comes to sea mammals instead of sea fish!!!! I'm thinking the more lights, smoke, mirrors, revolving disco balls, restaurants, day care, spas, etc. the better job you are doing educating instead of exploiting. Do you suppose when so many zoo's started competing with Disney with their Yukon Trading Posts, Temples to Ganesh, African Kitumba's, Aussie Outbacks and Golden Dragon buffet/Panda Exhibits with world class education instead of exploitation, AZA just assumed they had better relax their mission statement and agenda or they wouldn't have any members, except a handful, to even accredit?
