Artis Zoo--1902

Does anyone know when did the Artis Zoo stopped being called Natura Artis Magistra, or were they two different facilities. It is sometimes confusing to me.

Thank you. I have about 20 pictures in a file labeled Artis Zoo?? that are from Natura Artis Magistra, but I just wasn't sure there hadn't been a different or earlier zoo. According to "legend" there were three gates at the entrance one marked Natura, one marked Artis and one marked Magistra. Because the middle gate marked Artis was the only one used, the folks just started calling it Artis Zoo.

Are you sure that these cards came from 1902?, because in 1902 there was no bull elephant housed in Artis, The datbase only lists two bulls around that period. The first is Jack who whas shot by the police in 1849, after he escaped from his enclosure. The seccond one was Radjah, he is most likely the bull in the bellow picture, but he arrived in 1929, he came from the Royal Dutch East Indies Army.

Thank you for your input. I honestly don't know, and only post the date written with a picture or a date attributed to it, unless I know or suspect other wise. What a history Artis has. In my book it and Anthwerp are the Granddaddy's of zoo history.
There is an discussion current on showmeelephants with a link on the right about dates, locations, and also at how great, but imperfect and fallible the data base is. Amazing, Ryan/Radar who is quite a putz is helping founder Dan Koehl sort the data base out. Let's cross our fingers and hope he doesn't help turn into a rubic's cube. Dan need's to watch him.......

I am trying hard enough not to screw up the American history of elephants and now I get blamed for Europe's problems too?? Come on now!

Now that I have that off my chest, I checked several other online databases and found the same information Bjorn shared.

Jonas Livet has some nice pictures of 1900s Artis bulls at his site AsianElephant.net

Come on, Sue. Quite whining. It will toughen you up. So what are you saying? There are a number of other site's, besides the data base that are also wrong? Appreciate the link. Did you get the youtube and pictures I sent?
