I never saw this before but apparently caracal were also used for hunting. Has anyone else ever heard of using them? I wonder how successful they were with them?

I found something on web about hunting with caracal. They where trained for bird hunting in India and Iran. I will try to find some more info about it.

Thank you. They also used them for hunting rabbit's as well as birds in India. You have to wonder why they didn't just stick with the cheetah, unless the cheetah would eat small prey before the handler could get to it, or in some cases a smaller animal was easier to transport. It's amazing when you think these uneducated men were doing things like this with felines hundreds of years ago, and some goof sits one tiger up, or rolls one lion over, or hangs a few cat's over a bar, and he is applauded for being a "great trainer." Teaching a feline or elephant to do tricks is light years behind what ancient falconers and folks like these did with animals.

you are right, and I think that it is a shame that thier amazing knowledge about training these cats in such a way that they can be used for hunting, is most likley lost forever. And I found a little bit more info, apperntly Caracals were put in an arena containing a flock of pigeons, and wagers were made as to how many the cat would take down.

Putting them in a cage and letting them have a go at pigeons doesn't seem to sporting, ranking up there with dog fighting and bull baiting.
