Ghost Zoo-- Rosie, Grimsby Aquarium and Zoo

The entrance to Albert Sutcliffe's Grimsby Zoo, which used to occupy land in College Street, Grimsby

The Grimsby Telegraph reported at the time: “Rosie the elephant, that is such an attraction at Albert Sutcliffe’s Grimsby Zoo, attended her first wedding ceremony yesterday at the parish church, and was, of course, a great attraction.

“The head keeper, John Edward Haith, of West Dock Street, was marrying Miss Alice Gertrude Sillis, of Sanctuary Lane, and Rosie had expressed a wish to be present.

“So, gaily attired in her purple coat, bedecked with white silk ribbon, she attended with her keeper, EP Boff, who took with him for company the lion tamer, A Feeley, both in their white coats.

“Rosie, of course, was not allowed to enter the church, but in the absence of the bridal pair she was the central attraction of a large crowd as she waited at the Chantry Lane entrance to the church. Remembering the importance of the occasion, she was on her best behaviour, and took buns and other comestibles offered in her politest manner.

“The great time for Rosie was when the newly-married pair left the church. They stood one on each side of Rosie’s head while photographers got ready.

“Look pleasant, Rosie,’ said Boff, with a grin all over his face, and Rosie grinned with all her might and daintily lifted her trunk as the bridal pair joined hands under it.

“Mrs and Mrs Haith left amid a shower of confetti, Mr Sutcliffe seeing them off.

“And Rosie doubtless went home to an extra ton or two of hay as a wedding breakfast.”
