Edinburgh Zoo Polar Bear

Note the "rubbing" is gone in the photo above. It depends upon what time of year the animal is looked at, how dry it has been, and yes the size of it's enclosure, even with electricity as a deterrent the bear will find a wall to rub/pace against. But it is purely cosmetic or "public perception."

Animal rights campaigners believe the Polar Bear’s stone-built pen, around 40m in diameter with rocks, logs and a small moat, is too small, causing her anxiety and depression, which she exhibits by pacing her cage and wearing her fur and skin down by constant rubbing.

This is disgusting! These people should be ashamed of themselves. Polar bears belong in the wild. We can watch them on numerous videos...we don't need to hold them captive. Boycott ALL zoos and entertainment parks... :(

Christopher,
Get a hold of yourself and relax, Pal. Mercedes may not be the animal you want to hook your "freedom wagon" to. There may be others more "worthy" of your concern, but not her. As I understand it, she was rescued from the wild as a youngster, scheduled to be whacked for raiding garbage cans in the town(kinda like Yogi and Bubu. Now there's a couple of blokes you might want to concentrate your good work on.) She was brought to the zoo, long before "relocation" was in vogue(it still isn't 100%, actually). Her enclosure and relocation to Edinburgh was funded by the Mercedes auto company(they are loaded, aren't they) and we have to assume that they funded the enclosure that the zoo designed, which was "state of the art" at the time. Unfortunately, or fortunately, how ever you choose to look at it, she lived a long, long time in what you think is wrong. The enclose became antiquated in 2008, and Edinburgh didn't have the funds or the real estate to "relocate" her at the zoo. So they "relocated" her out the gate, and down the road. Good choice on their part, and an indication of their knowledge and husbandry skills. I have something here you can boycott, by the way. Now get busy Founding JellystoneEarth.org and do truly needy bears some real good.
