Unknown elephants and rider--Shrine Circus 1972

This photo can also be double clicked for detail. I don't know if that is Wanda Ward, who was indeed a beauty doing the trunk mount. That looks like Bombay mounted on the first elephant, with her trunk going all about, so this may be the Hamid-Morton elephants which became the Hawthorn 5 act, but I am not sure. The tubs look like the Hamid tubs, but I don't recognize the lead elephant. Could it possibly be Sherma, who had a go at Bob Gibbs and Al Vidbel at Circus World? I never knew Sherma or Siam from the original herd, of Bombay, Delhi, Joyce, Siam, and Sherma, as Sherma an Siam had been replaced by Tess and Billy when I was around them, and the act had become Bombay, Delhi, Joyce, Tess, and Billy.

Wade,
This is what Mr. Cline has recorded for Sherma:

SHERMA, Female Asian
1961 to 1969 - Hamid Morton Circus
1964 - Atlantic City Steele Pier
1973 ?? Circus World Museum
Hawthorne Circus Corp.
Lion Country Safari - West Palm Beach, Fl.
sent to Mexico

Any specifics you can add? If she was purchased by Cuneo with the original 5 act from Hamid-Morton, would she have been at Circus World after your former employer '86'd her' as you said?

Radar,
Boss Hogg still owned Sherma and she was part of the act, when she had a go at Gibbs and Vidbel. I never heard that she went to Lion Country Safari, although that is not unlikely as LCS West Palm Beach was a "stop off" point for many elephants on their way "South."

Before you go any further, you need to use the correct terminology on these locations. Circus World Museum is in Baraboo. Bobby and Al were there.

When you simply say Circus World, then you have pointed the direction to the Ringling Park in Florida.

Trivial perhaps, but makes a big difference in correct histories.

Wade,
If LCS was a stop off point, that would imply they were shipped south via boat rather than truck. Is this correct? I was told Laredo was the meeting point for C&B's permanent vacationers.

Bobby,
You are very correct. Did I possibly misunderstand Radar?

No I meant the Museum but I understand, Bob. Thank you for the correction. I will now retreat with my tail between my legs :)

Radar,
LCS was often a place to put them to get them off your hand's until they could be shipped elsewhere.

The Lion Country Safari in Grand Prarie, Texas, was a Hunt Brothers operation as well. In fact, it seems even though all International Animal Exchange elephants are listed in Ferndale, Michigan, no elephant was actually located there - they all came in and out of Texas. Was this true for all the LCS parks, or just Grand Prarie?
