Sam Lockhart

Above Sam Lockhart and Jenny Lockhart. All of Sam's elephants were given his last name.

Great photos. We haven't seen them before and they'd have looked great in the book. I wrote a lengthy appendix on Sam in "The Legend of Salt and Sauce". Jenny was most famously recorded as being part of the "Jock and Jenny" duo that worked in front of Queen Victoria (although he worked most of his elephants in front of her). Interesting there's no sign of Harry Lockhart who worked the b group of elephants for Ringlings. Also, Sam looks very young (and tall!) in these photos. The pictures I have of him in the USA, taken in the early 1900s show a much stouter individual who looks a lot older than this. For the record, I haven't any pictures of Harry Lockhart yet.

Jamie,
Joey may be able to accommodate you. I know he's not as touchy about that "tea tax" deal as I am, just don't mention the Queens Armada or sailing ships to him. LOL

Hello Guys
I am a Leamington Local Historian and very interested in Sam Lockhart who was based here and is buried in MIlverton Cemetery along with his wife Hattie I have a coy of Jamie's excellent book and have just come across the photos of Sam on your website.Surprisingly I have been unable to locate any locally taken photos of Sam or his elephants. I am part of the Leamington History Group and we would very much like to use the photos on our website together with an article about Sam. It would be good if someone could let me know what the copyright position is about use of these pics.

Allan,
Greetings and welcome to Circusnospin. I have forwarded you request on to both Joey and Jamie, and am confident they can help you. Jamie's book is excellent, well written and researched, a definite "must have" for any one interested in captive animal history.
I still have the first "Lockhart" whip I was shown how to make in 1974, and am interested in anything "Lockhart" if you would like to share. My email is wburck3@aol.com

For Leamington Local Historian Allen,

Hello Wade,
I hope you are well. Thanks for forwarding this onto me.

So long as he cites his sources(including the original source, which is listed in my book) I have no issue with him using any of the photos. To the best of my knowledge there are no copyright issues, especially as some are over 100 years old.

Dad looks forward to the photos.
Regards,
Jamie
