Boy, this "program" is about as cheap as a Shrine Circus program. Correct me if I am wrong, but were the Sanger's not Tommy Hannaford's ancestors, which was why his riding act was known as the Riding Sanger's. lor

Tommy and George's father's name was William George Sanger Hanneford, not because he was related to John Sanger, but because his parents, Ned and Elizabeth were performing on Sanger's Circus when he was born. Tommy used 'Sanger's Riding Academy' as the name of the mechanic/audience paticipation comedy riding act.

Thank you for the correction, my mistake. I guess I just always assumed given the mass paper that Tommy always hung about being from a family of "English Circus Royalty," and the usage of the name Sanger, that that was the "English Circus Royalty" he was referring to being's George was a Lord and all. I guess I got sucked in like a townie. LOL

Addendum to Ian,
The usage of the name "Sanger's Riding Academy" for the mechanic/audience participation riding act, must have either been Tommy's way of honoring a fellow member of the Royal Family, or a brilliant shot, due to a past beef.

Only just come across this site, but I well remember the "mechanic" riding machine. I used to spend my school holidays with the Sangers (they were my Godparents) and I used to act as a "stooge", coming out of the audience to fool around on the back of the horse, sometimes ending up under its belly! Horse was called Bronco, a docile sway-backed piebald. Another memorable act was Professor Sparks and his "Bath the baby" machine, which shocked (literally!) the competitors with static electricity. (High voltage, low current).
