A few day's ago, after the confiscation of the Von Uhl elephant and cats, there was a question about the elephant facility where Twiggy was kept. This link has footage of the barn, as well as Von Uhl's side of the story.

Thanks mate. But it still doesn't answer the question - what changed so suddenly if the barn has been OK for 15 years?

I can understand the cat seizure due to non-compliance with a directive over an extended period.

But, half an hour to upgrade a barn that's been fine for 15 years what gives??

Steve,
I am assuming the elephant barn was also part of the non compliance. If you look at it, even quickly, I don't see it passing much of an inspection. That may have been the reason for the "pending" sale to the zoo. It would be easier to place then the cats. I also can't see them just going after the cats.

Since Sept 17, 2008 (maybe longer, that's as far as I went back), there have been 2 non-compliance notes concerning the elephant barn in the APHIS reports. One for insufficient lighting and the second for a pile of poop; one each from November and December. Interestingly, they started doing monthly inspections last November and the December one was done on December 31, New Year's eve.

As to the big cats, von Uhl entered into an agreement with the USDA that I'm sure was (very poorly) written by the USDA. I've seen nothing in the news reports that shows that he violated that agreement.

Whatever the deal with the cats, it sure looks like they "targeted" the elephant given the lack of issues for at least a year ant then... suddenly... and there's the vet who actually tends the elephant saying it was happy and healthy 2 days earlier. Well...???
