A worthy cause

Very Sad News about an already sad situation.
Doris,
one of the Golden Carlos Twins was killed in an auto accident last
month. While her sister Karen was driving, Doris' passenger door
opened and while attempting to reach and close the door she was pulled from vehicle.
The Golden Carlos Twins were a top act in their day, notably Circus Vargas and several major Shrine dates here in the USA.
Unfortunately in recent years they have worked as street performers and passing the hat.
The youtube link shows the twins performing outside a restaurant.

Showfolks
of Sarasota has set up a fund to accept donations for Karen. La Norma
Fox has been a very close friend of the twins and will be
assisted by Aureila Nock in collecting and documenting the donations.

If
you would like to assist, please send your donation, payable to
Showfolks of Sarasota (please indicate "Carlos Twins Fund") and send to:
PO Box 1476, Sarasota, Florida 34230. Online donations can be made at showfolksclub.com, please indicate "Carlos Twins Fund" in the
special instructions box.

For those of you who know the Carlos Twins you can appreciate the tremendous struggle with this situation

Boy, that video sure evokes a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand it is remarkable that they were performing, on the other hand tragic. Thank God for Social Security, because without retirement plans available to circus performers, what would they do? Sarasota is full of elderly ex-performers living on the edge of poverty. It seems to be common theme - performers who once played all the top venues, now soliciting money to bury family members.
Animal acts seem to fare better than physical performers who have a shorter performing life, but, then with the expense of animals during down times, it didn't allow much savings for retirement. It has always been a precarious business at best, and today more than ever. It parallels the last years of the vaudville performers whose glory days ended in rooming houses.
It would make an awesome, though tragic, movie - the story of the Carlos twins.
