I wonder why they choose the Mountain Gorilla. Why didn't they go for the Cross River Gorilla, this subspecies of the western lowland Gorilla is the most endangered of the African apes. There are only around 280 Cross River Gorillas left against 720 Mountain Gorillas.

Bjorn,
I assume it has to do with "subspecies" status in a crisis situation. At any point, thank you for the comment. I had never heard of Cross River Gorilla's, and will look into their importance in the over all picture of Mountain Gorillas, and we will have an interesting dialog.

Wade,
just like you, I never heard of this Gorilla subspecies, until about month ago when i cam across some pictures of a female Cross River Gorilla on arkive.org As it turns out The North Carolina Zoological Park and the Wildlife Conservation Society, are working on a project to protect this Gorilla. I found clip on youtube about it, bellow is the link to the clip.
