I think I saw and met this guy in the late 90's performing for a 'Moscow circus',it was the generic name given to acts put together by Michael Edgely at the time, in Brisbane,Australia.It was the first time in my life that I had seen elephants mixed with cats in Australia.Does anybody else kmow more about this or am I way of base.

Yes it is the same.
Mr.Zapashny is today retired from the ring,being director of circus building in Sochi, Black Sea (his hometown), and in the last ten years he was also President of the Russian State Circus Company.
He is considered today one of the most powerful men in the Russian circus.
His son, Mstilav jun., is successfully active with his famous tiger act entirely performed on "misteriously" moving rolling mirror globes.
Elephants are not anymore in the act.
Some russian historian said me that in the late 60s the Soviet State Circus paid Mr.Zapashny a travel to Usa for documentation purposes. After having seen GGW's tiger on elephant, he apparently asked to the State the money to get elephants and produce an act to do better than his American colleague.
Zapashny's act resulted effectively very impressive and superbely produced, as I saw it several times in various versions up the early 90s, and I consider it the best achievement I ever witnessed in making work elephants and tigers in a fully routined same act.
I was also impressed, but unfortunately in the opposite sense, by the travel conditions and accomodations of his animals and by his training methods.
In 1992 Zapashny also wrote, directed ans starred in a huge full-evening circus play "Spartacus", a very ambitious project that I saw at Bolshoi Moscow Circus, reminding me of the turn of the century historical specs.

I was working tigers at the time and I will never forget the size of Mr Zapashny's hands,the scars he bore and if I'm not mistaken the lack of a finger or two.At that time I had collected a few 'war wounds' and reminded myself that I had got off lightly.Thankyou for your interesting information.

I didn't realize you worked cat's. When and where was that?

I saw him performing in Den Haag in 2001, I think but was still young and think their was just one tiger left. He performed at the Great Russian State Circus from the family Smitt.

I am definitely not in the league of some of the esteemed professionals that have graced your blog.I first 'played around' with some young lions and handraised a jaguar in the mid eighties at a private zoo in Sydney.I then worked at a number of zoos doing their thing and enjoyed cheetahs during this time and in the mid nineties I got a job at Tiger Island(tigers and cougars) on the Gold Coast and worked with some blokes from Marine world Africa.After this I worked some more lions and a cougar at a private zoo and then to the US and I did a gig with Jack Hanna,a big moment for me,with lions and a Clouded leopard that I trained.I secretly always wanted to work cats but elephants have been the mainstay.I visit Jim Clubb's place as often as possible to watch him and his team train their most recent acts.Sorry about the documentary but I just have loved nearly every minute of it.
