An animal-rights organization is praising a group of New York City firefighters for trying to duck bathing a Coney Island circus elephant for a publicity photo.
The Uniformed Firefighters Association says city officials finally ordered the firefighters to scrub "Suzie" for Wednesday's photo.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals gave Engine Co. 245 its Compassionate Fire Department Award plaque on Friday. PETA believes animals don't belong in the circus and has previously accused circuses of abusing elephants.
There were no emergency calls during the 30 minutes the busy firehouse was closed while firefighters polished the pachyderm.
The fire department says it only wanted firefighters to spray the elephant with water as it paraded by the firehouse.
