It amazes me that Kiev Zoo couldn't do it themselves.

Oh Boy, that's a jumbo pedicure

They say elephants never forget, but this one hadn't remembered to trim his nails for ages.

So a special tusk force was called in to give Boy, a 39-year-old Asian elephant, a pedicure.

A team of German vets flew in - by jumbo jet, presumably - to help their Ukrainian colleagues at Kiev Zoo tackle a sedated Boy's nails with electrical grinders. And judging by that huge clipping, it was a mammoth feat.

"By the looks of the nails in the top photo the feet were in pretty tough shape."

It always amazes me also when "elephant people" have to bring in some one to take care of their animals feet. I thought that was a part of our duties.

The front nails do look pretty rough. And it is surprising they had to out source for the job. Now days alot of zoos over do the foot care I think just to make up something to do with the critters (which can be as bad as not doing foot work). I am with Joey on this one.No Contact and all, what do you suppose the elephant keepers do all day there Joey??,,,,,LOL

Casey, they probably spend the day making enrichment toys and feeders instead of doing something constructive like spending time WITH animals they are charged. That seems to be the current trend.
