I don't know if the rocks and stones were added to this exhibit or if they were just there naturally. Either way they had to be unpleasant to pace/walk on.

Wade, Big Cat Falls at the Philadelphia Zoo is gorgeous and lush (it was last years AZA exhibit award winner). It was built around the old Big Cat House, which is where their "bedrooms" are, and the building was constructed in 1951. So when they come in for the night, their quarters are very similar to those in the picture, minus the rocks of course. By the way, the AZA convention this year is September 12 - 18, so there will be new exhibit award winners announced.

Mary Ann,
Going into quarters like this in the evening temporarily is not detrimental to an animals physical/mental well being. A lifetime of this environment is disastrous.
