Robert Stipka Jr., son of a famous Hungarian horse trainer does the horse training for Cirque Richter and is very skilled. I got to know Robert quite well, and noting various techniques, I noted that he didn't wear spurs when he was schooling, and only wore them when he was in the show. Translation, in schooling he wants the horse to work some of it out himself, and when it is finished and in the show, he wants the horse to do what he is told when he is told. Kinda the opposite of how most animal trainers think.

I saw some video of his work on You Tube in practice and his horses are quite nice and do nice piaffe and passage etc. I have never heard of this theory about spurs before but he must be really good or really strong to get a Friesian to do piaffe and passage without spurs.
Dianne,
You hit the nail on the head. Robert has very muscular thick legs. Not stout thick, but long thick. When I first met Robert it was the day after the Richters had arrived and unloaded at the Krone winter winter quarters. I was walking by the enclosed training barn, with the windows open and I heard this loud poom, poom, poom, poom. I thought what the hell is that, as I knew there was 3 foot of soft flooring in the ring barn, and peaked in the door just in time to see Robert passage across the ring in the other direction. I guess I said, "damn" a little loud, because Florian looked over at the door, laughed and invited me in. First thing I asked Florian was "how is he getting that without spurs?" And Florian said, "he has Schwartzeneger legs." LOL

katja schumann would not use spurs. she called them [hooks].
Johnny,
That's why given her size and build, she could not move a load like a Friesian brilliantly like Robert does with out them and Dianne Olds Rossi does with them. I refer to them as iron, but that is just my North Dakota creeping out.

And maybe that's why Katcha uses the lighter weight horses. Everyone has their preferences and way of training but the fact remains that spurs are no different than whips and when used correctly are very useful.
Dianne,
I was going to point out the use of Arabians and the fact that the reason why I don't have a gun is because I don't know how to use it, but that it is all right for law enforcement.
