Louie--Toledo Zoo

Another great photo taken by Joe Howell, submitted by Mary Ann Howell

Letter from an elementary teacher:

My five-year old students, are learning to read.

Yesterday one of them pointed at a picture in a zoo book and said,

"Look at this! It's a frickin' elephant!"

I took a deep breath, then asked..."What did you call it?"

"It's a frickin' elephant! It says so on the picture!"

And so it does...

" A f r i c a n Elephant "

Hooked on phonics! Ain't it wonderful?

Wade, this is the elephant calf named for Lou Scherer, the zoo director who had 31 years of free contact with Babe after he killed two keepers. The Toledo Zoo levy passed a while back, so this fall they will begin expanding the elephant exhibit, including building bull quarters for Louie.

Wade, I should also have mentioned that Louie and his mom Renee presently have free contact, but Louie is being trained for protected contact. Here he is exhibiting "trunk", "ears", and "shake".

Mary Ann,
I can't for the life of me imagine what would be the need for "ears" from a distance and "shake", even in a protected contact situation. "Steady" and "back up" might be more beneficial in the long run.

Wade, if not practical, maybe some of it is to entertain the zoo guests. He draws a crowd on the afternoons that they do this. Joe was disappointed that I didn't send you the one of him siiting on the huge log, which is his favorite.
