A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

To the author of this blog,I appreciate your effort in this topic.
With all due respect. I would pay to see the girl on the bottom. The one on top,,,,,,,,well,,,,,,I won't be rude to the point of honesty,,,I just won't buy a ticket. Sorry if this is a relative of a friend of mine, just callin a ball game like I see it.
Well, I personally wouldn't pay to see the girl, but if the horses pleased me that would be a different story. What are all the rope-a dopes?
As an after thought, pay to see the girl and not the horses? I know a place in Lake Geneva that could use your business .LOL
Dianne,
The point was you are not going to see a person. You see one and their horses, then you see the other and their horses. Which one would you go back to see?
An animal free has become the big thing, as you know. How do you feel about bridleless demonstrations, and what were you thought when we say Cavalia and the Lusitano's were doing a "free" liberty act.
It has lead some in the audience to think that restraint is cruel. I know one for sure on this site that believes that. Because the environment is controlled in the ring after a time with liberty horses as you know, can be undressed. But like the piaffe and passage demonstrated on Alberts tap it is "sloppy" or not "correct" as it should be. Free liberty acts perform basic maneuvers. They will almost always do the same few basics, as the more difficult maneuvers require the aid of tack.
How quick can a horse bolt from a standstill, and they are easier to gain control of going around in a controlled circle. When they bolt it is away. I don't think you do your dog a favor not putting a leash on him even though he has never run. Some day he might, when you least expect it, and it may lead to death or serious injury.
I an not qualified to school you, Madame Col. so I will just say, if at some point you have to put restraint on them they are not free, and I don't chose to cross my fingers and hope, plus they look sharp in iron and leather.
I think a nice thin white rolled leather halter would look better then the hybrid indian hackamores,
but again the screwiness of the uniformed see a halter as restraint. Psst... Between you and I, as much as they may "love" you occasionally they will have to be "pulled" to you, especially if the one next to him is "telling" him to stay back. But you know herd dynamics.

It is my view that horses running free or at liberty takes a special animal. I think the only way they are beautiful is when they are running at full speed in an area befitting their size and even then only when carefully selected for his running beauty, not all horses run beautiful.
My Black & White act was trained for this venue and nothing was prettier than seeing my white Arabian thunder into the arena turning his head to gaze at the audience as he roared by. It was quite exhilarating to have him run up to my black horse I was riding and rear on command and it was an very emotional experience. It was a very difficult task to train a free horse to respond immediately to voice in his state of excitement but this horses did that and more, these two horses built their own performance with their personalities. I would hate to replace this act as these two horses are special beyond belief.
I had the task of refitting this act into a 60 ft arena and it took the life out of a brilliant performance. No longer were they anticipating their entrance into the arena, they cantered in an uninterested and robotic moves performing their tasks in a regimented manner. What was a stunning display of horses who loved to perform became a so so display of bored horse flesh. No longer able to watch my beloved friends use the last of their life in this manner I am happy to say they are back to being their wonderful selves, performing in venues that let them express themselves.
So freedom can be beautiful carefully orchestrated but I agree can be terribly uninteresting if just presented for freedom's sake. You do the horses or yourselves no credit. There is nothing more beautiful than a horse proudly prancing into the arena in elegant equipment his heard carried in a regal beautiful collected manner.
Madame Col.
I was referencing a small ring and not running free. And there is nothing more beautiful the an Arabian blowing and snorting with excitement, tail fountained over their back, jerk prancing like and excited elk. And Baby indeed fit that bill like a lot of Stallions don't. But just trotting around going through synchronized maneuvers sloppily, is a different deal.
But you know when they run at full speed, with their head cranked out like Beaney the Sea Serpent, it bothers me, so I just look at their feet to see if they are on the right lead. LOL
