As "flawed" as modern animal exibiting may be at times, it still beats this by miles.

The old Ape House at Columbus, OH was indeed, small and sterile. It appeared to be a small copy of the Cincinnati Ape House. BUT, it was the location of the first gorilla birth in captivity.

I"ve heard a story that may be true (if not, don't let facts get in the way of a good tale) Warren Thomas, DVM, was a vet student at Ohio State and worked at the Columbus Zoo. It's said in the evenings he would let Mac and Millie together against the official protocol. The result was Colo.

Jim,
A Plato's Retreat for Gorilla's is about as innovative as you can get. I am surprised somebody didn't see the disco ball reflecting off the mirrors and out the barred windows and report something "strange going on in the monkey house. Imagine the scene if they had been busted. Dr. Thomas ducking out one door with the camera, and two gorillas trying to get dressed and into their convertible and out the gate.
Dr. Thomas actually went on to become a very respected member of the zoo fraternity with a number of accomplishments to his credit, and that's a great story, facts be damned.

COLO: Find the COLO and Dr. Warren Thomas storys very interesting. As a youth I made many visits to the Columbus and Cincinnati Zoo's. I can remember my visit to the Columbus Zoo soon after you could view COLO...I still have a zoo ticket that had COLO's picture and name on it.It wasn't torn in half and its still in excellent condition. As I grew up and moved out of the area I never returned to the Columbus Zoo until the PANDA Exhibit during the 90's what a change in the zoo. Might say its time to make another visit to Columbus...Presently, we are waiting on a double elephant birth at the Pittsburgh Zoo...Hope visit this fall.
