From Mary Ann Howell. Firstly Mary Ann, what kind of name is "Vinkel?" I think is one of the strangest phenomena in the feline world. When you castrate a male lion he loses his mane, and when females reach menopause the grow mane of varying length and thickness. It does not occur with any othe felines as far as I know.

Wade, I don't know what kind of name "Vinkel" is. My guess would be Afrikaaner, since they came from Johannesburg. David Wood, who was the mammal curator at the Philadelphia Zoo at the time, brought them to this country. We had the honor of meeting him a couple of times in the late '90's. I believe that he is at another zoo in PA now.
