"There is much difference of opinion as to how far the Wild Asses of Egypt and Africa are to be regarded as distinct species, but it is generally agreed that these are the source of the domestic Ass. The Egyptian Wild Ass has a dark stripe along the back and another across the shoulder, but in the Somali Ass the dorsal stripe is indistinct and the shoulder stripe is absent."

The Somali wild ass is a critically endangered wild member of the horse family, found in small numbers in desert areas of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Probably less than 1,000 exist in northeastern Africa. There are currently only 27 Somali wild asses in North America, with seven at the Saint Louis Zoo. Only one other zoo in North America has bred this species, the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
