A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Have never seen reference to this place before. Was probably fun. The whole Ostrich thing seems come into vogue every thirty years or so as the next big thing nobody will ever make make any money on. There's a gentleman at my local farmer's market who sells jerky etc. Once asked him about his business model. "Gonna be really big if we can get the product into Safeway." But of course it never does end up in Safeway. Kind of like Beefalo dreams... Jax looks like it was strictly for tourists and probably worked better than a strictly farming operation. I like the idea that some animals are charismatic and some aren't. Elephants, tigers, giant snakes, pigs, even rabbits are charismatic, and horses perhaps the most charismatic of all. Camels, or tapirs, or woodchucks don't conjure up the same warm fuzzy feelings. Penguins are charismatic, ostriches I'm afraid ain't. Worked in a place once with a mixed exhibit area, kind of a dumping ground housing ostriches, rheas, and a couple of very aggressive male axis deer. Always figured it would pretty damned ignoble to get hurt in there, as it would likely mean either a sucking chest wound from Bambi's father, or evisceration from a giant bird.

Ben,
You are right about the Ostrich becoming money makers every 30 years. If it wasn't for the cheap Mexican Ostrich boot market, they would be closed down now.
Charismatic? It is alright to raise Ostrich for food and by products, but suggest it being feasible with felines?
It is good you didn't get "downed and browned" at the place you mentioned. It would have been terrible PR press for you.
When I was training the pigs in Canada, some individual's were concerned with what I would tell people I did. They said, "you can't tell them you are a pig trainer. That doesn't sound neat like tiger trainer. Yet, you aren't training tigers." I told them not to worry, I have just always said I am an Animal Trainer, and that usually covers everything. And in the current political climate, garners a lot of scornful looks. LOL
