A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.
Does anybody have any idea why the "black spots" are so pronounce over the eyes of Tabbys, Snow Whites, and Ligers.

Wade, this is Suri, whose name means Celestial Sun. She was one of the snow white daughters of Bhim and Sumita. She died early in 1999, and we went down to New Orleans for Thanksgiving 1999, so we didn't get to see her before she was gone. The zoo magazine had a really nice tribute to her. We saw the two white striped brothers that came after her. The promotion was "Two - because one could never replace Suri." Also, while we were there, Kevin Chambers' male champagne lion was on loan. Suri's striped littermate sister was Kivali, from Toronto.

Thanks for running this picture of Suri. She was a really nice animal to be around. Along with the elephants, she and two orphaned lioness cubs were my resonsibility as the carnivore buildings are right next to the elephant barn. The many donations that she garnered paid for alot of other exhibits over the years ('84-'99). It was a sad day for all that knew her. The two bothers that came along after were born in Nashville, then to Sacramento then Audubon. Names are Adee and Bhoja (King Rex and King Zulu to the locals). Adee went through 5 hours of surgury a week ago due to impailing himself on a branch in his exhibit, henis doing fine now. Cyndi and I were hand rearing those lion cubs when Mr. Chambers brought in his "white" lions. That turned into a disaster. We were sued for breaking contract when we decided not to breed the already genetically deformed brother and sister pair. I baby sitted them from 6pm to 6am the night before they left the zoo. I'll email you the Suri memorial page.
Wade, did you ever get that package I sent you?
Joey,
Great story. That name Chambers rings a bell, but I don't think I have met him, only know the "reputation".
Joey, yes the package came yesterday. I can't thank you enough. I sure wish I could reciprocate with something. I am going to run the pictures in the vintage zoo book in the next couple of day. Thank you so much and give my best to your wife.
Regards,
Wade
To Miss Howell,
To show how much the city of New Orleans loved this tiger. When the zoo went with the "Two- because one could never replace Suri" campaign, the newpaper and the zoo started getting irrate complaints saying "not even 100 tigers could replace Suri". Sometimes you just can't win.
Joey, please call me Mary Ann. Yes, Suri was special, and I'm so sorry that we missed her. How have you guys been doing since Katrina? We contributed when the Brookfield Zoo was collecting for your zoo after the disaster. We were very impressed with your zoo. Our overall impression, other than being one of the nicest zoos that we have ever been to, is that it seems so much bigger than it actually is. In other words, it has so much yet it doesn't seem crowded. Also, it has lots of cats: white tigers, lions, jaguars, and amur leopards. I still have the decal with Adee and Bodja on the windshield of my car (my little one, not the van my husband drives). We really liked the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit, which is very unique. We could well understand why it was the AZA Exhibit of the Year award winner when it opened. I'm glad to hear that Adee is doing well after his accident and surgery.

Mary Ann, thank you for the kind words and for contributing to us. All that the other facilities did for us came in handy and was greatly appreciated. We are doing very well now. Attendance is up and we are open 6 days a week. Between the zoo, Audubon park and the Riverview park (behind the zoo) we lost about 300 trees. The next afternnon after the storm I had the elephants out in harness removing alot of the debris. The National Guard (Oklahouma) arrived after about 9 days with all there trucks and 3 Blackhawk helicoptors and set up shop in the zoo parking lot which was cool. They were a great help in the clean up and repairs. I gave a pilot an elephant ride and he me a Blackhawk ride (I think I made out better)!
Poor Adee, tomorow he gets some of his stitches out and gets 4 root canals on his caninies. We are also celebrating the birth of our 13th Amur leopard.
