Fortunately many of the structures at the Giza Zoo have been given heritage protection. From the outside looking in, heritage/landmark designation/protection would seem a great thing, but what a difficulty it poses for the designated zoo and it's staff. A well know zoo director put it in a "different perspective" for me during a conversation when he remarked, "it is easy to protect an ancient Buddhist temple, or an ancient Indian village. You are not asking any one, or any thing to live there and be healthy and content. Protecting and not changing a zoo structure, while attempting to modernize it for the benefit of it's inhabitant's is a difficult, often daunting situation to be faced with."
