A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Vintage Zoo Atlanta/Grant Park
Yesterday resident sea lion/pinniped expert Jim Alexander, who's life mission is to correct every little mistake I make, noted that sea lion exhibits in which they are circled by humans, with no visual barriers in which to escape from the pressure of being surrounded, was not the ideal sea lion exhibit. In defense of Grant Park Zoo, which was almost closed down before it became Zoo Atlanta, note the tree planted on top of Point Bennet, San Miguel Island in the middle of the sea lion exhibit. I suggest Grant Park Zoo progressively realized the need for visual barriers, as early as 1961, when this photo was taken.
