The animals were viewed through ornate openings into barren cages/stalls before outdoor habitats were built.

Sometimes in man's arrogance to build, the need's of the animals were forgotten, if they were known at all. A tough task in the restoration of these magnificent buildings is to retain the feel, while providing proper habitat's for the animals.






The architecture of the Elephant House has been described as a "Hungarian art nouveau and national Romantic, Oriental-Hungarian, Muslim style. " It was designed and built by Hungarian architect Károly Kós, and was awarded "Outstanding Architecture" by the European Union.
